Bracket & Voting Questions Answered

Here you can find written instructions on how to fill out the bracket.

Here you can watch video instructions on how to fill out the bracket.

Students must fill out their brackets prior to the start of the tournament.

The brackets are so they can predict who they think will win.  The voting determines which songs advance to the next round.  It is a single elimination tournament, just like the NCAA basketball tournament.  Unless the students have a perfect bracket, song matchups in later rounds will not all be the ones they predicted, so they may not be voting for songs they originally picked.  This keeps them engaged in the process until the end since their vote helps determine who wins.  Think of the voting as the “games” in the NCAA tournament.

Whichever they'd like! Some people also might vote for their favorites, while others vote for the ones they think will win. You decide!

We do our best to provide workarounds to the most common problems. For example, our reveal videos can be accessed via a Google Drive folder so that teachers can download them ahead of time if YouTube is blocked at their school. Please consult your own tech team whenever possible if issues arise.

Teachers enter their class's votes on their Teacher Dashboard. Sign in with your email and we'll send you a code; no password needed.

Each vote is open for two days. Voting opens at 8 a.m. Eastern on the first day and closes at 8 p.m. Eastern on the second day. This is firm: votes entered after the deadline can't be counted. Your Teacher Dashboard always shows the current match and its deadline, and the bracket calendar lists the dates of every vote. Worried you'll forget? Set a reminder for an hour before voting closes!

We suggest having students submit the completed bracket to the teacher. If students have completed the bracket on paper, teachers can make copies of the brackets for accountability purposes before returning the brackets to students so that points can be tallied. You might even REQUIRE students to use PEN or marker so changes can’t be made. If students complete the bracket electronically, students should submit a screenshot of the bracket to teachers prior to voting for accountability.

If you are using Challonge to tally votes, tell students that is the one that counts, not the one that may be on their paper copy.

Absolutely! This is why our votes run for two days. The only time this might be a challenge is for the Friday/Saturday votes, but you can also collect their votes ahead of time or via your LMS.

Yes. However, you will have to submit your students’ votes during the voting window if you want your students’ votes counted in the official tally. This will mean you will have to collect their votes either prior to or during your break. Alternatively, you can devise your own voting system and timelines using our bracket.

Nothing. We will have enough votes from elsewhere to ensure there is a contest. Failure to vote just means they have no say in the outcome (just like an election!).

That is completely up to you. Perhaps they share the prize, if there is one, or you could ask them a musical trivia question as a tiebreaker.

Contest Questions Answered

Mais oui! We strive to have songs that will appeal to all audiences on the playlist. Of course, you should screen for yourself since you know your audience best.

Our team carefully screens all songs and videos to ensure they are school-appropriate from elementary school through university. However, you know your community best. It is the responsibility of each teacher to carefully screen all Manie materials to ensure they work for their students. Please always review our yearly disclaimers.

We “collect” potential songs all year and also ask for suggestions in our teacher-only Facebook group. Our screening team reviews the nominations for language and content, then makes a draft list of potential contenders. After that, we look at balance - musical styles, where the artists are from, male & female singers, etc. It is a very intense and time-consuming process!

The day the playlist is finalized, we look at the YouTube views for each song. That determines the song's "seed" so that the process is objective. To learn more, click here.

Bien sûr! In fact, this can really increase engagement if you are remote. It’s up to each teacher to determine which parts they want to make “live” (in person) or remote. Do what works for you & your students!

We do not offer prizes for winners in individual schools; that is up to each participating teacher. However, we do offer prizes for winners of our side contests such as our yearly talent contests. There are also some teacher prizes if you join the teacher challenge! Please see the teacher page of our website for details.

If allowed, treat the lyrics like poetry and have your student express opinions and do analysis of those. You could also have them research the countries the artists are from, or explore the basketball side of Manie. There are vocabulary lists available for basketball terms, a chat mat on comparing Manie to March Madness, and a slide show of francophone basketball players.

YES! Teachers regularly tell us their students beg for Manie every year, and that even the least motivated students get into it. We are able to hook the sports kids through the basketball connection, the artsy kids through the side contests and creative projects, the kids who love to discuss and debate, and more! Students consistently say it's their favorite time of year. The best part? They are having so much fun, they don't realize how much they're learning. It's the ultimate resource for student engagement.

We've got you! Our team created a whole curriculum around Manie. We have activities connected to the standards and to the three modes of communication (ACTFL) and to the four strands (Canada). For a sample, click here.

If you are looking to promote digital citizenship, build classroom community, and bring joy to your classroom, Manie is for you. Improved learning outcomes include better pronunciation, cultural knowledge, civil discourse, creativity, respect for others' opinions, authentic and accurate grammar and vocabulary acquisition, and more!
